Lopez Island, Washington
11 homes, 2 SRO units, office space for Community Land Trust
Completed 2008 while at Mithun.
This small, important project provides affordable housing in owner-built straw-bale homes with the goal of using zero (net) energy. Water is limited to rainfall captured on-site — within a community cistern for common use and with individual cisterns for resident vegetable gardens. A photo-voltaic array at the south edge of the meadow provides power, or supplies the regional grid with excess energy not used by these small, very efficient homes.
