Cheltenham Beach Residence

Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand

Completed 2009

Designed as a “get-away” residence for a Northwest home builder, this project sits directly on one of the finest beaches in the world.  Shoe-horned into a tiny infill site, this house was designed within the traditional vocabulary required by the town of Devonport, and within a building envelope calculated to avoid casting shadows over neighboring properties.  The house is expressed as two discrete pavilions linked by the flat-roofed kitchen hub.  In the ocean-facing living pavilion, folding doors open both ways — to the often windy ocean side and to the tranquil, sheltered garden side.
